working at carroll’s kitchen

Our Restorative Employment Model is made up of two programs: Stability Program to support personal growth and a Culinary Program to support professional growth. The Stability Program is a tiered system of resources and goals that lead a woman overcoming crisis through the obstacles of long-term stability, like housing, transportation, and childcare. The Culinary Program is a tiered system of skills and goals that train a woman overcoming crisis for focused production and healthy leadership in a fast-paced kitchen and any job setting.

The Hiring Process

The first step in our hiring process is a referral from a community partner. We rely on community partners to refer clients ready to flourish in our structured, long-term (1-year) program. The referral form can be filled out HERE.

Next we will schedule an interview with the candidate. It’s a combination of traditional job interview, a conversation about their current circumstances, and a measured needs assessment. A resume is recommended, though not required.

If the candidate moves beyond the interview phase and into the work stage, she will schedule 16 - 20 hours of work in the kitchen. The candidate will be evaluated at the end of each shift on her performance and display of our values: positive, engaged, team oriented, and responsible.

A candidate who successfully moves through the previous stages will be offered a position when a spot opens up, which may not be immediate because we hire on a rolling basis. The employee will undergo a 30 day probationary trial period and begin tier 1 of the Restorative Employment Model.

Qualifications

Our Restorative Employment Model is designed for women overcoming crisis(es) like homelessness, involvement in the justice system, addiction, or domestic violence. No kitchen experience is required, but they must be able to stand on their feet for eight hours consecutively. An ideal candidate for our employment program is:

  • Positive, engaged, team oriented, and responsible.

  • Ready to flourish in a supportive and challenging environment.

What to Expect

We hire on a rolling basis, meaning we hire one program position at a time when one opens or is about to open up. If a candidate is interested in joining our program but there aren’t any openings, she can complete her interview and volunteer hours in anticipation of potentially filling a future opening.

Being in our program means someone is employed at our restaurant and simultaneously participating in our stability and culinary programs. She’s working up to 40 hours a week in the restaurant and also working towards personal goals related to her long-term stability.

The average length for our program is one year. We don’t prescribe an end date. Starting pay is $12/hour and working hours are generally between 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. at 19 East Martin Street.
